COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Plainfield community gathered on Sunday at Van Horn Woods East to mark Wadee Day in honor of Wadee Alfayoumi—a six-year-old victim of a hate crime nearly two years ago. A state resolution named September 21 as both International Day of Peace for Children and Wadee Day, and a new playground dedicated to him shows the community’s commitment to his memory.  ABC7 Chicago
  • The Will County Center for Community Concerns is offering holiday food baskets for 125 income-eligible families with children 16 or younger. Applications will be accepted Monday through Friday at the center's office and each basket includes a new coat, hat and gloves or mittens for each child, along with gifts and food for a holiday meal.  Herald-News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Forest Preserve District of Will County received $101,600 from the Nature Foundation of Will County on Sept. 11 to fund projects in preservation, conservation, education and recreation. The funds—coming from Citgo Petroleum, Vulcan Materials, Pembina Pipeline, Earthrise Energy and the foundation—will be used for projects at Romeoville Prairie, Hidden Oaks, Four Rivers and Monee Reservoir.  Herald-News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Plainfield Park District Executive Director Carlo Capalbo was inducted as a Fellow into the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration on Sept. 16 at the National Recreation and Park Association Conference in Orlando, Florida—an honor for his 15 years of leadership in parks and recreation. The honor marks a significant achievement in his long service and commitment to advancing local park programs.  Herald-News
