COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Former Plainfield resident Jennifer Saari recalled her childhood experience of the Aug. 28 tornado that struck Plainfield—causing damage in nearby communities—and said it inspired her to become a meteorologist; she now leads outreach at the National Weather Service to improve storm warnings for the deaf and hard-of-hearing.  Herald-News
  • Will County readers can now listen to the week’s 5 most-read stories from Aug. 24-30 in a new audio format powered by Everlit’s AI technology—this audio edition covers key local news including a historic view of a 1990 tornado near Al Litwiller’s former home.  Shaw Local

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Thirty-five years ago the F5 Plainfield Tornado—one of the most powerful storms—struck Plainfield and nearby communities, killing 29 people, injuring over 353 and causing about $380 million in damage. Survivors recalled flying debris and blocked roads as neighbors helped clean up the wreckage.  Herald-News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Bill Daley and Ray LaHood are relaunching a campaign to amend the state constitution to end partisan gerrymandering in our state legislative districts by proposing a 12-member commission to draw fair maps without using voter party data—They noted the plan will follow lessons from a 2016 effort that was struck down in court and does not change how congressional maps are made.  Shaw Local
