EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Joliet Township High School District 204 Board of Education held a special meeting on Monday where returning members took an oath, and the board selected Matthew Kennedy as president, Lorraine Guerrero Neumayer as vice president, and Michelle Stiff as secretary—Christine Lynn was named the district's representative to the Illinois Association of School Boards Governing Board.  Herald-News
  • Students in Will County sent Thank You Teachers letters praising local educators for their creativity, kindness, and hard work in making school a supportive place to learn. The letters—shared by students from different grades—highlight the significant impact teachers have in inspiring a love of learning.  Herald-News
  • Juan and Sandy Figueroa teach at Creekside Elementary School in Plainfield, where Juan is a bilingual teacher and Sandy is a reading specialist (drawing on their own experiences learning English to help students). They drive to work together and serve on a school committee that supports student placement and provides extra help.  Shaw Local

SPORTS NEWS

  • Plainfield North’s girls track team won the Southwest Prairie Conference Meet on May 7 in Minooka—finishing with 147 points while Oswego East and the host team scored 119.5 and 116 respectively.  Herald-News
  • Marina Hristov pitched six shutout innings to help Minooka beat Plainfield South 4-2 in a Southwest Prairie Conference game on Wednesday. The cool, windy conditions helped her pitch well — her strong performance kept the Cougars from scoring more runs.  Herald-News
  • Plainfield North scored 7 runs in the first inning to beat Joliet Central 17-1 in five innings, which moved the Tigers to an 8-14 conference record and put them half a game closer to sixth in the Southwest Prairie Conference. Joliet Central managed only 5 hits while Plainfield North added runs in each inning after their strong start to boost their playoff hopes.  Herald-News
