BUSINESS NEWS

  • Lion Electric will auction its Joliet manufacturing plant on May 14 - the sale includes over 300 pieces of production equipment as it exits the Chicago-area market after suspending operations last December. Local officials said the move confirms the end of the 2023 promise to create hundreds of jobs after a grand opening attended by Gov JB Pritzker.  Herald-News

CRIME NEWS

  • A former Plainfield Township landlord, Joseph Czuba, was sentenced on Friday by Will County Judge Amy Bertani-Tomczak to 30 years in prison for the hate crime murder of 6-year-old Wadee Alfayoumi—who was stabbed 26 times on Oct. 14, 2023—and received additional sentences of 20 years for the attempted murder of the child’s mother plus three years for another hate crime.  Shaw Local
  • Detective Peter Ranstead, charged with domestic battery and interfering with abuse reports at a Joliet home on Oct. 1, 2024, remains on leave as his review continues—his misdemeanor case in Kendall County is set for a hearing on May 7 and trial steps starting with a meeting on July 9 and jury selection on July 14.  Herald-News
  • An employee at the State's Attorney Office is under investigation for malfeasance by the sheriff’s office, which began earlier this week—officials said a court seal limits further comment and confirmed local police are not involved.  Herald-News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Illinois Department of Transportation announced that lanes on I-80 in Joliet will be reduced starting Monday for inspections of the Des Plaines River bridges until May 16, with lane closures from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. during which at least one lane in each direction will remain open—motorists should expect delays and use alternate routes.  Herald-News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox earned its 21st consecutive A rating for patient safety from The Leapfrog Group, joining an elite group of hospitals (31 nationwide and 7 in Illinois) that have maintained high safety standards for 10 years. The hospital was praised for its commitment to safe, exceptional care.  Herald-News
